Oscar Gala 2024: Final list of nominations.

Hello everyone, one more week. We are very excited because the season of our favorite awards is just around the corner. We are getting closer to finding out the winners of the most important film awards in Spain and Hollywood. Today, we are here to talk about the Oscars, as last week we learned the list of official nominees.

The Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 10, during the night from Sunday to Monday in Spain.

The 'Barbenheimer' phenomenon was the favorite after a year in which both 'Barbie' and 'Oppenheimer' surpassed the rest of the titles at the box office.

Lily Gladstone led many of the bets in her category, while Cillian Murphy and Bradley Cooper will have to compete for the 'Best Actor' statuette, a category that surprisingly does not include Leonardo DiCaprio for his role in 'The Killers of the Flower Moon.'

In summary, among the nominations for the 2024 Oscars, 'Oppenheimer' clearly stands out with 13 nominations, closely followed by 'Poor Creatures' with 11, and 'The Killers of the Flower Moon' with 10.

Following these top 3 titles closely is 'Barbie' with 8 nominations. 'Maestro' has finally received 7 nominations, and 'Anatomy of a Fall', 'The Holdovers', ' 'The Zone of Interest', and 'American Fiction' have each received 5 nominations.

For many, the absence of 'Margot Robbie' or 'Greta Gerwing' on this list has been a surprise, and Ryan Gosling has already made statements: "There's no Ken without Barbie. To say that I'm disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be a fall short..."

In the Spanish nominations, we can boast of the two nominations for 'Society of the Snow' ('Best International Film' and 'Best Makeup and Hairstyling') and the presence of the excellent 'Robot Dreams' in the candidacy for the best animated film.

And finally, let's list the nominees in the categories of 'Best Film,' 'Best Director,' and 'Best Actor/Actress in a Leading Role.' We are already catching up to watch all the movies that are still on our list!

Nominees for the 2024 Oscar for Best Film:

'American Fiction'; 'Anatomy of a Fall'; 'Barbie'; 'The Holdovers'; 'The Killers of the Flower Moon; 'Maestro'; 'Oppenheimer'; 'Past Lives'; 'Poor Creatures'; 'The Zone of Interest.'

Nominees for the 2024 Oscar for Best Director:

Justine Triet, for 'Anatomy of a Fall'; Martin Scorsese, for 'The Killers of the Flower Moon; Yorgos Lanthimos, for 'Poor Creatures'; Christopher Nolan, for 'Oppenheimer'; Jonathan Glazer, for 'The Zone of Interest'.

Nominees for the 2024 Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role:

Lily Gladstone, for 'The Killers of the Flower Moon'; Carey Mulligan, for 'Maestro'; Sandra Hüller, for 'Anatomy of a Fall'; Annette Bening, for 'Nyad'; and Emma Stone, for 'Poor Creatures.'

Nominees for the 2024 Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role:

Bradley Cooper, for 'Maestro'; Colman Domingo, for 'Rustin'; Paul Giamatti, for 'The Holdovers'; Cillian Murphy, for 'Oppenheimer'; Jeffrey Wright, for 'American Fiction.'

'Dune: Part Two': The eagerly anticipated and acclaimed sequel finally arrives in Spain

Welcome back for another week! Today, we will talk about 'Dune: Part Two', directed by Denis Villeneuve, the highly anticipated sequel to the cinematic adaptation of the iconic science fiction novel written by Frank Herbert. The first installment, released in 2021, was a success both commercially and critically, and now fans are gearing up to immerse themselves once again in the intriguing world of the desert planet Arrakis.

The release of this film was impacted by last year's Hollywood strike, leading Warner Bros and Legendary Entertainment to postpone its originally scheduled release in November. The decision was made to prevent the lack of promotion from negatively affecting the box office, given the absence of stars at promotional events.

This production has been one of the most ambitious projects in recent years, aiming to surpass the box office success of the first installment, which grossed around $435 million worldwide. To achieve this, it boasts a simply spectacular cast, featuring several of the most viral and prominent celebrities of recent years, including Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, and Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica. Additionally, it also includes the participation of our very own Javier Bardem as Stilgar.

Filming began in 2022 in Budapest and Abu Dhabi, concluding in December of the same year. The world premiere took place in London this February, generating great excitement among fans of the saga.

In the first installment, Denis Villeneuve's direction received praise for the visual interpretation and capturing the epic tone of the original work.

The story unfolds on Arrakis, a desert planet rich in a valuable spice called "melange." It follows the life of Paul Atreides, whose family is assigned to rule Arrakis. The film addresses themes of politics, power, and ecology in a science fiction context, creating a fascinating and complex universe.

The sequel picks up the story exactly where the first part left off, with Paul and his mother as the last survivors of House Atreides. Faced with the oppression of the rival House Harkonnen, now ruling Arrakis, they must deal with the Fremen, the people who have welcomed them. Paul confronts his destiny and the tensions between being considered a messiah or an outsider.

So far, the movie has received enthusiastic reviews, with a 97% rating on RottenTomatoes, surpassing the 83% mark of its predecessor. This rating places it ahead of science fiction classics such as '2001: A Space Odyssey' , 'Back to the Future' , 'Blade Runner' or 'Star Wars'.

In conclusion, 'Dune: Part Two' promises to be an unforgettable cinematic experience, with cinematography and visual effects worthy of admiration in a movie theater. You won't want to miss it!

The Most Anticipated Releases of March

Greetings and welcome back to our blog! With the eagerly awaited Oscars ceremony just around the corner and the awards season coming to an end, this week, we decided to look a bit into the future. Today, we will talk about some of the movies that will hit the Spanish cinemas next March. So, get your calendars ready because some cinematic gems are coming your way that you'll definitely want to mark with a red circle; and as usual, we'll provide options for you to enjoy with the little ones.

March kicks off strong, and starting from day one, we can finally enjoy the long-awaited 'Dune: Part Two', the sequel to the successful science fiction film, following its delay due to Hollywood strikes last year. Starring Timotheé Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and Javier Bardem, among others, this space adventure follows Paul (Timotheé) as he joins Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen in seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the universe, he must avoid a terrible future. It is an adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel, directed by Denis Villeneuve.

Continuing in chronological order, on March 8, 'Kung Fu Panda 4' is released, the fourth installment of the famous 2008 animated film. After three adventures defying death and defeating his enemies, Po, the Dragon Warrior, is called by destiny to take a break. He will be asked for something that will pose a couple of problems for our favorite panda. Po will need new help, and in his discovery, he will realize that heroes can be found in the most unexpected places.

‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’. From March 22, we can enjoy a new film from the famous franchise, initiated in 1984. This time, the film will be starring Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, and Finn Wolfhard. The new story will narrate how the Spengler family returns to where it all began - the iconic firehouse in New York - to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who have developed a secret research laboratory to take ghost hunting to the next level. When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, the new and old Ghostbusters must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.

We continue with a home product. 'The Benetón Family', starring Leo Harlem, is a family comedy that will make us laugh and have a good time with Toni; a bachelor who has always avoided children. Toni will have to face cultural differences and the challenges of parenthood in the modern world and will discover that the true family is the one you choose. We can also enjoy this fun family comedy starting from March 22.

To finish our list, on March 27, 'Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire' is released, a new adventure that will pit the all-powerful Kong against the formidable Godzilla, facing an unknown threat hidden within our world. Directed by Adam Wingard.

That's all for this week, but don't relax! This year is loaded with great releases, and we'll be discussing them with you from here, so you don't miss anything.

The Goya Awards 2024: A "dreamed" gala starring 'Society of the Snow'.

On Saturday, February 10th, the most important night of the year for Spanish cinema took place in Valladolid. From 10:04 PM onwards, we enjoyed an exciting, assertive, and fun gala, masterfully hosted by the Javis and Ana Belén.

The 38th edition of the Goya Awards started with the Javis in pajamas on a sofa, imagining what their "dreamed gala" would be like, and turning it into reality. Thus, the opening number featured Amaia and David Bisbal, performing Raphael's 'Mi Gran Noche'.

Almost 3 and a half hours of the gala provided plenty of memorable moments, but there were some stellar moments of the night that shine a bit brighter in our memories. Below, we'll briefly review the highlights of the night.

While it's clear that it was a magical night for all nominees and winners, there was a clear protagonist that overshadowed much of the night: J.A. Bayona's latest masterpiece, 'Society of the Snow'. At the start of the night, the film had 13 nominations, 2 less than '20,000 Species of Bees' by Estíbaliz Urresola. By the end of the gala, 'Society of the Snow ' became the third most awarded film in the history of the Goya Awards, with 12 statuettes, surpassed only by '¡Ay, Carmela!'  in 1990, with 13 and 'The Sea Inside' in 2004, with 15.

With an estimated budget of 60 million euros, the film deservedly took home awards for 'Best Direction,' 'Best Film,' 'Best Sound,' 'Best Emerging Actor,' 'Best Cinematography,' 'Best Editing,' 'Best Original Music,' 'Best Art Direction,' 'Best Costume Design,' 'Best Makeup and Hairstyling,' 'Best Special Effects,' and 'Best Production Direction.' The only award that eluded it was 'Best Adapted Screenplay,' which went to the animated film 'Robot Dreams' by Pablo Berger, the other film representing Spain at the Oscars.

Of the 12 times 'The Snow Society' took the stage to receive an award, the one we remember the most was when Argentine Matías Recalt accepted the 'Best Emerging Actor' award. He delivered an emotional speech, dedicating the award to his father, who passed away just as the actor began working on the film.

Estíbaliz's film won 3 awards, including 'Best New Director.' In the categories of 'Best Actor and Actress in a Leading Role,' David Verdaguer for 'Saben aquell' and Malena Alterio for 'Something is about to happen' received their awards.

Sigourney Weaver received the 'International Goya' from her friend J.A. Bayona. In her brilliant and comprehensive speech, where she expressed pride in being there and admiration for Spanish cinema, she highlighted words of appreciation for María López, her Spanish voice actress.

As mentioned, it was also a night of advocacy. There were pleas against sexual violence: "Here in the cinema, it's over too...this concerns us all," declared the gala hosts. Many artists also took their moment at the microphone to speak about the genocide in Gaza, advocate for peace, diversity of race in Spanish cinema, or the importance of cinema in our culture and the importance of subsidies.

This has been just a summary of the night. If you haven't seen it yet, want to relive the best moments, or delve into the list of winners, you can do so on the RTVE website. We are already looking forward to what the next gala, on February 25, 2025, in Granada, will bring us.
