Se podría
decir que el episodio de reunión de Friends ha sido algo ansiadamente
esperado. 26 años después de aquel primer episodio piloto titulado “En el que
Monica tiene una compañera” cuando Rachel (Jennifer Aniston
) entra en la cafetería y se forma el
quinteto de amigos mas célebre de la historia de la televisión ; 17 años
después de su final en el que este grupo de amigos dejan su hogar de la
juventud y se separan para comenzar sus vidas adultas, por fin, el pasado 27 de
Mayo de 2021 pudimos volver a ver a las cinco caras mas conocidas de la comedia
en un mismo sitio.
Esta reunión no se trató de ningún tipo de reboot, spin-off o capitulo especial en el que se volviera a abrir la trama. Tal como explicaron una de sus creadoras y el propio cast, sentían que los personajes habían recibido un final perfecto y no querían poner en riesgo la integridad de la serie ni de sus personajes creando y cambiando tramas que ya de por si eran idóneas tanto en el momento de su creación como en el presente.
En su lugar, la reunión fue un pastiche de shows que contaban con un cierto estilo documental y que se iban sucediendo uno tras otro sin un orden muy claro. El capitulo empezó con la reunión del cast en el plato donde rememoraron viejos tiempos, y esto se fue intercalando con un concurso de preguntas, una lectura de guion, tomas falsas, y una entrevista conducida por el presentador James Corden en frente de la famosa fuente de la serie y con apariciones de invitados especiales.
Muchos podrían argumentar que realmente a la reunión no le falto absolutamente nada ya que contó con tantas partes y estaban pasando tantas cosas a la vez que era difícil sentirse aburrido. Otros en cambio defenderán que el ritmo frenético y la constante sucesión de elementos tan dispares resultaba un poco abrumante y confuso, y habría preferido una charla tranquila de los protagonistas y los creadores sin tanto espectáculo y sin la aparición estrellas internacionales que poco tienen que ver con la serie.
Realmente depende mucho de las expectativas de cada persona, del tipo de fan que son y quizás, también de su edad. Es verdad que esta reunión se ha hecho para atraer sobretodo al publico mas joven de la serie, que se ha enganchado hace poco o que quiere engancharse. El hecho de que fue promocionado como un espectáculo con la presencia de estrellas como Justin Bieber, BTS o Cara Delevigne es un claro ejemplo de esto, y tiene sentido que muchos fans hayan pensado que estaban un poco fuera de lugar y rompían en cierto modo con el ambiente nostálgico que buscaban crear en algunos momentos del show.
Sin embargo, para muchos fans el hecho de el esperado rencuentro haya sido un evento masificado no ha restado calidad al show. Además de estos fragmentos hechos con un claro fin de aportar grandiosidad a la hora y media del capitulo, también hay muchas otras partes que encajan perfectamente con nuestro recuerdo de la serie, y resultan como una herramienta perfecta para rememorarlo con un anhelo agridulce. Algunos ejemplos son sobre todo las partes en las que los protagonistas charlan sobre sus mejores vivencias haciendo la serie y hablan del gran fenómeno de masas que supuso en su momento y sigue suponiendo ahora. También salieron a la luz algunos secretos que dejaron a muchos fans en shock como el hecho de que los actores que interpretan a una de las parejas mas famosas de la serie, Ross y a Rachel ( Jennifer Aniston y David Schwimmer) revelan que, al igual que sus personajes, ellos también tuvieron un pequeño flechazo rodando la serie.
En definitiva,
quizás la reunión no fue perfecta y no cumplió con las expectativas de muchos
de sus fans. Sin embargo, hay que tener en cuenta que, para una serie como
esta, que se ha mantenido relevante y popular durante 30 años y ha atraído a
muchas generaciones, satisfacer a todos sus fans era prácticamente imposible.

Was the Friends reunion all we expected?
You could say that the Friends reunion episode was eagerly awaited. 26 years after that first pilot episode titled “The One Where Monica Gets a roommate” when Rachel (Jennifer Anniston) walks into the cafeteria and the most famous quintet of friends in television history is formed. 17 years after its end in which this group of friends left their youth home and separated to begin their adult lives. Finally, on May 27, 2021, we were able to see again the five best-known faces of the comedy in one place.
This meeting was not about any type of reboot, spin-off, or special chapter in which the plot was reopened. As explained by one of its creators and the cast itself, they felt that the characters had received a perfect ending and did not want to jeopardize the integrity of the series or its characters by creating and changing plots that were already as suitable at the moment of its creation as in the present.
Instead, the meeting was a pastiche of shows with a documentary style that was happening one after another without a very clear order. The episode began with the cast meeting at the plate where they remembered old times, and this was interspersed with a quiz, a script reading, outtakes, and an interview conducted by host James Corden in front of the famous fountain of the series and with special guest appearances.
Many could argue that the meeting lacked absolutely nothing since it had so many parts and so many things were happening at the same time that it was difficult to feel bored. Others, on the other hand, will defend that the frenetic pace and the constant succession of such disparate elements was a bit overwhelming and confusing, and they would have preferred a quiet chat from the protagonists and creators without so much spectacle and without the appearance of international stars who have little to do with the tv show.
It depends a lot on the expectations of each
person, the type of fan they are, and perhaps also their age. This meeting has
indeed been held to attract above all the younger audience of the series, which
has recently streamed the show or wants to stream it. The fact that it was
promoted as a show with the presence of stars like Justin Bieber, BTS, or Cara
Delevigne is a clear example of this, and it makes sense that many fans have
thought that they were a bit out of place and broke, in a way, with the
nostalgic atmosphere that they sought to create in some moments of the show.
However, for many fans, the fact that the expected reunion was a massive event has not detracted quality from the show. Leaving aside these fragments made with a clear purpose of adding grandeur to the hour and a half of the episode, many other parts fit perfectly with our memory of the series and are a perfect tool to remember it with bittersweet longing.
Some examples are the parts in which the protagonists talk about their best experiences doing the series and about the great mass phenomenon that is supposed at the time and continues to now. Some secrets also came to light that left many fans in shock, such as the fact that the actors who play one of the most famous couples in the series, Ross and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer) revealed that, like their characters, they also had a small crush on each other while filming series.
Ultimately, perhaps the reunion was not perfect and did not meet the expectations of many of his fans. However, we must keep in mind that for a tv show like this, which has remained relevant and popular for 30 years and has attracted many generations, satisfying all its fans was practically impossible.
