China: All in a big way

China is always surprising us and it  looks like they are going to continue doing so - now it is the turn of art culture. Needless to say, the yellow giant is already the largest art market, ahead of the United States, accounting for 33% of sales of works of art, worth  20,000 million Euros.  Add to this the fact that 6 of the 10 highest paid artists in the world are Chinese, and they hold the record amount paid for a work of modern art.
China and the world think that now is the turn of Hong Kong. The city that was able to make a country co-exist with two systems  will become the Cultural Capital of Asia between now and 2026, according to forecasts by Norman Foster.  This huge project has stunned everyone: 23 acres reclaimed from the sea of the Great Park will host 17 cultural venues, with five of the most important centres opening in the next few years - including the titanic museum M +, with over 20,000 square meters for displays. The best architects in the world are fighting to create the design for the displays and Hong Kong will allocate about 29,000 million of their dollars (for us the not inconsiderable amount of 3,000 million Euros), to complete the new Asian cultural centre.
This exciting project has already caught the attention of the greatest collector of Chinese art: the Swiss Uli Sigg, who has already donated 1,463 works of art, valued at approximately 137 million euros, to the future museum  . It will be located just in front of the spectacular Victoria Harbour and along the Avenue of Stars, which will increase national and international visitors.
Now it's your turn, do you think it is possible to create a city culture, with or without tradition, simply by investing large sums of money?

BRAVE

BRAVE

Last Friday was the premiere of "Brave,” the first Disney-Pixar film where the protagonist and hero of the movie is a female.

Princess Merida is an excellent archer, daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor, and lives in the Scottish Highlands, where tradition reigns, and where each person has their future planned.  Mérida causes chaos and fury in the kingdom because she challenges one of the most ancient and sacred practices of the warlords.  To try to put things right she asks an eccentric witch for help, who only complicates things even more, and Merida has to overcome various difficult situations to break the spell the witch gave her.

The highlight of this film is that its protagonist is the antithesis of the stereotype Disney princess viewers are used to.  She does "what she wants and follows her instincts."   Many young girls will be able to identify with this side of Merida.

The premiere in Spain is expected to be another Pixar success, which raised 173 million Euros on the weekend of its release in the U.S.  According to entertainer Ramiro Lopez, "the Pixar brand delivers its promises and creates entertainment everyone likes.”

The tragic death of an actor

The Dark Knight Rises reaches the 300 million in the USA box offices. This is how so many cinema headlines begin nowadays. In many cases, the reason for their success is a fantastic plot, the appearance of a determined actor or actress, the screenwriter and, finally, the main topic of this article: a tragedy.

As we know in The Dark Knight example, if we ignore the cinematographic disaster of The imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, we can consider this film as the last performance of the actor Heath Ledger, because he died after taking a lethal mix  of medicines, the details of which are still unknown..

Heath Ledger’s example is not the only one. There are more cases like The Crow, a film that had extraordinary success because of the tragic death of the main character, performed by Brandon Lee (Bruce Lee’s son).  The actor died because he was shot repeatedly in one of the scenes; he was supposed to be shot by a blank bullet, but instead, someone took a real weapon, the one that killed him.

It is not just films that have been glorified by deaths and tragic events,  the actors themselves have become, in many cases, really famous after their deaths, and beyond the fame, they became cinema icons. The best example to illustrate this is the actress Marilyn Monroe, who nowadays is still one of the great icons of the modern world.

So, after reviewing the most popular deaths in the cinema world, and the impact on their fame after having passed away, I would like to ask a question: To what extent do you think it is ethical to use the death of a person to make a film more successful? Do you think it is necessary to have a tragic death for a movie star to become one the great icons?

The "Carmina o Revienta" Controversy

It seems that Paco Leon has initiated the origins of what may be a change in the distribution of Spanish films, with his debut film "Carmina o revienta.”  This Film Director received numerous criticisms because he released his film simultaneously in Cinema, DVD and Internet, breaking the current system of distribution and exhibition based on "ventanas de explotación" (time limits established for the different media).  When a movie is released in a Cinema, it has exclusivity for a certain period and is impossible to find this film on DVD or the Internet.

The Film director asked his Twitter followers how they wanted to see his film, and if they would like to buy it for 1,90 €.   After a massive response, the director understood that “people want to see films when they are released, not three or four months after”... “there is a demand that cinema theatres do not cover.”    So he decided that his film could be seen simultaneously in different cinemas, on paid television, DVD and on legal streaming websites like Filmin, charged at prices between 1,90 and 7 €.

With this move, Paco León has managed to give everyone access to the movie at the same time, in a variety of legal formats. As he said, “Films are best seen in the cinema, but the most important thing is that they are seen.”

In the first week of its debut, 4,600 people saw it in the cinema, and since then 17,650 people have seen it online, and 11,000 people have bought the DVD.  The film is the sixth most watched film in the country with more than 62,000 viewers.

So people want to pay for watch  films, and Paco´s experiment could be the start of a new way to distribute all types of films, giving everyone access to them.

Time will tell if the simultaneous release of films on various media will become the norm or not.
