The Inspiration for Photography: From the National Gallery of London to Spain

From the photography of the 18th century until now there links with the noble and ancient art of  painting which cannot be ignored.

It is that National Gallery of London  that is preparing a new exhibition, “Seduced by art: Photography past and present.”  The exhibition will open on the  31st of October, and in February of 2013 will come to Spain, when  the exhibition is transferred to the CaixaForum in Barcelona, and Madrid in June.

The exhibition shows us the inspiration that painting has offered to photography.  A relatively modern art that was not appreciated at first, because compared to the laborious work that drawing requires,  it seemed to lack artistic value.

We can see the relationship between painting and photography in simple details, like the composition of the scenes, or the positions of the models, the light, the landscapes…

This influence begins by looking at the sensual and religious images taken in the 19th century by  Julia Margaret Cameron, best known for her work with portraits, and the photographs taken by Helen Chadwick a century later, emphasized by a light surrealistic touch, in some cases, and for there characteristic use of bright colors.

Later the exhibition highlights the connections that exist between the painting of Thomas Gainsborough and the present photography of Martin Parr and Tina Barley.

Apart from showing us these and many more works, in this exhibition we will find more surprises: for example,  artist Maisie Broadhead, who uses technology, but in this case it is a video filmed especially for the exhibition, which recreates the portrait of Lady Eastlake, a Victorian lady.

I am not going to go into further detail, because I want you to see it for yourself.  You will be surprised.  And remember that art is as multidisciplinary as science.  It is like a tree. The multiple existing connections between their diverse branches should not be valued any less.

The Wanderers:  Carlos Sisi

The epidemic didn’t take them, it brought them back

TECHNICAL CARD:

Author: Carlos Sisí
Published: December 2009
Publisher: Dolmen
Genre: Terror, Zombie

CRITIQUE:

When we think about the “zombie” genre we usually think of the fabulous movies of George A. Romero, the mythical videogame “Resident Evil” (Forget some of the spin-offs and the fourth and fifth game), or the successful TV Series “The Walking Dead”, where the zombies harass and endanger our protagonist’s lives. However, if we look at the scene of the “crime”, it always happens in places like the US, England or Tokyo.

This book is set somewhere we are already familiar with: Spain. Like “Apocalipsis Z” did two years ago, “Los Caminantes” is set in a Spanish territory destroyed by a zombie epidemic. It doesn’t matter (for the moment) why or when the zombies get control of the world, but we will know what happened with some initial resistance to the epidemic.

Beginning with this premise, the book takes on the role of Juan Aranda, Isabel, Moses, “El cojo” and the other characters, each one more charming than the last. All of them will be wrapped in a spiral of terror and violence capable of driving anyone crazy, especially if we are in the city where we have lived most of our life and we have to face our family members, friends and acquaintances in a zombie state.

In the middle of all this “Chaos” we will find with a figure devoted to God: the priest Isidro. This character will be the Nemesis of the humans from Málaga, because Isidro thinks he has a Mission and a gift from God which lets him walk amongst the zombies without arousing any interest in him. This is where the true horror begins for the survivors as the priest begins to hunt them with an undead army.

The Characterization of the characters and their relationship are tribal in the course of the novel. Sisí puts special emphasis on the physical and psychological description of the survivors of the pandemic, without differentiating between the protagonists and the characters that are going to die just around the corner.   This “attitude” creates more tension than in others books of the same genre, because only the main character survives and he is the only who is described in detailed. In this book anyone can die.

The plot is so elaborate, like the psychological depth of the survivors throughout the story.  In addition to the elaborate twists marked by the horror and the chaos of the events, but it has the ability to hook anyone who begins reading the book, like some sticky TV series but with a Hollywood movie plot. We can’t know how the book will end (before finishing it), the huge twists and turns will get quickly get us to the fantastic ending that is waiting for us in the lasts pages.

Maybe the first part of the book is the hardest to read for those who are not used to the “Zombie genre”, but you soon get accustomed to the feelings of disgust, anxiety and terror these creatures induce in us. Although we should not expect less aggressiveness from this title, because the cover already shows us what we can expect.

As the first part of the “Caminantes” trilogy, this novel satisfies with all the expectations of those who read it.  This book has recently been released for e-books and it has a perfect English translation for readers interested in this new wave of Spanish zombie literature.

¿WHERE IS THE LIMIT?

Maria Casado, the discreet presenter on Spanish television, was on the cover of a gossip magazine last week. This presenter was "caught" going topless on the beach, and the photos published are not particularly flattering.

After seeing this cover I felt indignant.  And I have been trying to understand what Terelu Campos, two Big Brother contestants and Maria Casado have in common, and  I wonder: Can a magazine, newspaper or media invade the privacy of a person?  Does the fact a professional works in the media give automatic permission to be involved in this gossip world? Is the fact that you never want to participate in the world of gossip, exclusive and rumors a good enough reason for not publishing these pictures?

I can understand that there are people who earn money, with more or less dignity, selling their privacy, which is embarrassing. I try to understand that television is full of a big brothers, lovers and others celebrities who  work as media professionals. I take on board,  but don't agree, that these figures describe themselves as journalists,  when they don´t do anything to obtain this title. I acept that they sell their lives, their sons´s lives, their house, their funeral and their reincarnation if they want to be a very important person in this world. I understand that they lost their shame a long time ago so they could be "breaking news." But I can´t understand why if the gossip world has it´s own princesses, bullfighters, buffoons, lovers, ex...Why there a need to include people in this ridiculous circus who want no part of it?  Why there is a need to destroy the life of a  person who just works professionally?. Is it because nowadays there are no limits and we are playing to "everything goes ?"
