“Animales
fantásticos y dónde encontrarlos”, escrita por J.K Rowling,
dirigida por David
Yates (“Harry
Potter y la Orden del Fénix”, “Harry
Potter y el Misterio del Príncipe”
y “Harry

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM
Without
a doubt, the most anticipated film of 2016, “Fantastic Beasts and Where To
Find Them” is J.K. Rowling’s latest film instalment, which is set in her magical Harry Potter
universe. The film, written by J.K. Rowling, directed by David Yates (“Harry
Potter and the Order of Phoenix”, “Harry
Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and “Harry
Potter and the Deathly Hallows”), and starring Eddie Redmayne, has come out five years after the last Harry Potter film, which inevitably has some big shoes to fill: it has the task of
satisfying millions of fans around the world who all hope the film will measure
up to its predecessor.
The film follows Newt
Scamander, a magizoologist travelling to New York with a suitcase full of magic creatures, until
his suitcase is accidentally mixed up with that of a No-Maj (or muggle). Simultaneously, there is a second storyline developed
around wizard Grindelwald - who is already
well known by the fans of J.K Rowling’s work.
An advantage offered by the film is how it
delivered the story through the necessary elements that make up an entertaining
movie, such as: the rhythm -which allows the plot to evolve easily-, the use of
great photography and the special effects are amazing from the beginning
onwards. However, what made the film work were its characters. On the one hand,
the beasts were a breath of fresh air for a world that was considered no longer
able to surprise us anymore, making it impossible not to grow fond of some of
the creatures and their carers. On the other hand, we have Jacob
Kowalski (Dan Fogler), the No-Maj who ends up mixed in the world of magic and left surprised
by everything, which makes him one of the loveliest and sympathetic characters.
The whole experience is a reference to all
the fans of the Harry Potter universe. If the first film was where we first saw
the world of J.K Rowling through the eyes of a young boy that discovered, along
with the spectator, an amazing world of magic with changing stairs and a
horrible villain, this new work put the viewers in a superior position. Having
prior knowledge on how the magic world works, we are able to enjoy Kowalski’s
amusement when he finds out about magic. This is one of the strongest comedy aspects
of the film. Furthermore, the name-drops of some characters that we have
already met or that are related to others from the previous films help create
the illusion of making the film feel closer to home- creating the need to fill
in the gaps between the events of the movie and the end of the original saga’s
story.
It could be said that the film needed to
further develop Grindelwald’s character, which would have helped make his
intentions a lot easier to be appreciated, since he appears essential to the
plot at the beginning but is quickly pushed to the background by the end.
Even though most of fans know its origins and its ending, those that are
not so familiar with the story will find it difficult to see past his role
within the first film. However, it can be said that this was done on purpose
due to the fact that there are four other films to go for further developing
the character and answering all our questions.
So the only thing to do is to sit and
enjoy the first film, since this was no more than a warm up for all the magic
that is yet to come.
