Saul Bass, diseñador de carteles de cine: Exposición prorrogada.

La exposición organizada por el Círculo de Bellas Artes y la Casa Europa (Madrid), se prorroga hasta el día 17 de febrero.

Saul Bass es un artista célebre estadounidense dedicado a la cartelería del cine. La concepción moderna del diseño de carteles del cine, y de los títulos de crédito tienen de base la obra de Bass.

Sus carteles son más que destacados en la historia del cine: Piscosis, Vértigo, Anatomía de un asesinato, Exodus o El hombre del brazo de oro entre otros carteles.

Su estudio dedicado a la publicidad lo abrió en Los Ángeles en 1950. Conoció allí a Otto Preminger, quien le invitó a hacer el diseño del póster para su película Carmen Jones. A partir de ahí arrancó su carrera de colaboración con los directores más destacados además de Preminger: Alfred Hitchcock, Marten Scorsese, Billy Wilder, entre otros.

Gyorgy Kepes, un gráfico húngaro que había trabajado con László Moholy-Nagy en Berlín, fue quien acercó a Bass al estilo Bauhaus y al Constructivismo Ruso. Tras haber trabajado en varias agencias en Nueva York, se trasladó a Los Ángeles en 1946 con la intención de lograr un mayor apogeo en su desarrollo creativo. 

Además, se vinculó también a la participación de escenas cinematográficas que son ya un clásico: la famosa de la ducha en Psicosis. También se la atribuye a él, la dignificación y transformación de los títulos de crédito artísticamente. Ya que son un componente más: adelanta, cuenta, introduce o insinúa la historia de la película.

Según Gerardo Vera, a cuya colección pertenecen los carteles de la exhibición, "Bass consigue en una sola imagen, plasmar la idea de la película en una síntesis poderosa y definitiva que ya es, por derecho, marca de la casa… sus carteles apuntan, insinúan, casi nunca definen, dejando así un amplio margen para que sea el espectador quien complete su propia visión".

Saul Bass is a well-known American artist dedicated to the creation of movie posters. The modern approach to movie poster design, and credits are based on Bass´ work. His posters are legendary in the history of cinema: Psycho, Vertigo, Anatomy of a Murder, Exodus or The Man with the Golden Arm are just a few example of his posters.

He open a studio dedicated to advertising in Los Angeles in 1950. He met Otto Preminger there, who invited him to design the poster for his film Carmen Jones. From there his career really took off, and he began working with other leading directors including Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorcese, and Billy Wilder, among others.

Gyorgy Kepes, a Hungarian graphic designer who had worked with László Moholy-Nagy in Berlin, was the one who introduced Bass to Bauhaus style and Russian Constructivism. After working at several New York agencies, he moved to Los Angeles in 1946 with the intention of reaching greater heights in his creative development.

He was also linked to classic cinematic scenes: the famous Psycho shower, and the transformation of the credits into a more artistic format, as they are an important component of the movie, introducing the story, giving the history of the film etc.

According to Gerardo Vera, whose collection of posters makes up the exhibition, "Bass captures the idea of the film with a powerful and definitive synthesis, in a single image, which becomes a brand ... his posters suggest, hint, almost never define, leaving ample room for the spectator to complete their own vision. "
