Fear Street: the horror trilogy that is making it big this summer
On July 4, Netflix released the first film in the trilogy based on same name novels by R.L Stine, Fear Street. The trilogy has three films that narrate the plot of Shadyside, a cursed town that has a long history of serial killers and tragedies attributed to a mystery happening in the past. With this saga, Netflix seeks to attract all lovers of the horror genre and the author, creating a convoluted history through 300 years about this town.
To begin to get hooked on this plot, the first film entitled Fear Street: 1994 transports us to the present moment of this story and introduces us to those who will be the protagonists throughout the saga, Sam and Deena, two teenagers who represent a bit of the Romeo and Juliet from the 90s, with a history of forbidden love, not only because they are gay but also because they live in two towns which have faced each other for centuries; however, after being involved in a series of bloody events, they meet again to fight against the strange curse that haunts the town.
In the
second film, we move to a summer camp in 1978, where we are introduced to new
decisive characters in order to understand the past of the town, at the same
time that we are shown one of its greatest massacres. Just as the first film
transports us to a 90s environment with airs of slasher films of that moment
like Scream,
this second installment reminds us of similar films like Friday
the 13th, both with very clear references that result in
easter eggs for horror lovers.
It is not until the third film, Fear Street: 1966 where we know the origin and the explanation of everything that is happening in the following decades. In this installment, there is a twist concerning the previous ones and the film becomes a true period piece, which is full of mysticism, witchcraft and, as the title implies, sacrifices to the devil. Perhaps, it is these jumps, not only temporary and plot-wise but also generic, that make this trilogy such a rich and addictive piece of work. In each film, they explore different inter-genres of the horror genre, without neglecting the essence of any of the movies and their core themes.
Once the plot of each of the films in the trilogy has been clarified, it is important to talk about some of the reasons why it has worked so well, to the point of positioning itself in the first positions of Netflix reproductions.
The first point to comment on is their rating: the films have received an R rating, which means that they are not suitable for children under 17 years of age. This represents a change concerning the novels by R.L Stine that were aimed at an adolescent audience and dealt with much more young adult issues as can be seen in other films that have been made by the same author such as the Goosebumps saga.
This readjustment of classification has been key, since it has given the director much more creative freedom, being able to delve into darker and more terrifying narratives such as gore, and that has certainly been in his favor.
Another important point has been the novelty of the format, a film trilogy that has been released regularly and weekly in the same way as a serial would. As well as temporal fragmentation, using very popular times in terms of terror and uniting them in a great story.
Finally, another issue that has also greatly influenced the richness and popularity of the trilogy has been the fact of including two girls as the main couple, two “final girls” who are also in a love relationship. This has not only been an important transformation for a genre as stereotyped as terror, but it has also served to give visibility and representation to the community.
To
conclude, we must indicate that this saga is not perfect by any means. It has
many points, regarding the script and the plot aren’t perfect as well as a
multitude of dead times and failures. However, it is very addictive
entertainment, with very interesting and transformative moments within the
genre, and that will surely amuse horror lovers.
