What makes a cult film?

Surely, we have heard the term "cult film" on many occasions, both from fans, as directors, editors, and so on. But the reality is that we have rarely stopped to reflect on what it means to be a cult film, how they are created, and why it maintains such a close connection with its followers.

A cult film is a film production that has managed to acquire a popular cult among fans. These types of films have a strange but special appeal and are often eccentric or surreal, with unconventional plots and quirky characters who get caught up in unusual situations. That is to say, they are films that the common public would call rare, but that for other types of viewers are considered unique, and hence their follow-up.

Although his favorite genres are horror and science fiction, cult films often mix several film genres. These are generally films that did not have a large box office, and achieved their popularity years later from word of mouth, completely ignoring the opinions of mainstream critics.

That is why when films with a lot of following (especially teenagers) such as Star Wars or Pirates of the Caribbean are called cult films, in many cases it is going against the essence of these films. In response to this, Michael Blyth, the man in charge of scheduling the annual Cult selection at the London film festival, responds in his interview with the BBC: “I think that the 'cult' should exist fundamentally in the original ways in which we understand it.: a celebration of vulgar culture, based on ideas of camp and irony, transgression and subversion "

If we look into the most famous and faithful to their form cult films, we find very peculiar works that at no time were made to achieve fame, and yet they reached the highest ranks of the cult fans.

A clear example is the case of Reefer Madness, a propaganda film made as a documentary in the 1930s about the dangers of marijuana; El Topo, the Mexican spaghetti western film considered the first "midnight movie" about a gunman in an adventurous quest to defeat his enemies; or Todd Browning's Freaks, which since its premiere was promoted as the weirdest movie ever made.

On the other hand, there are also cult films that have been critically acclaimed, including works such as Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, Blade Runner, or Apocalypse now. However, many passionate people argue about their true belonging to cult cinema, for the mere reason that they are not strange enough and difficult to understand to the point of being well considered by critics.

The reality is that if there is something that defines these types of films, it is subjectivity, and that is why it is so difficult to determine which ones fall into the cult category and which ones do not. However, all these films have something that moves and fascinates many people, which makes them a very interesting and special product in the world of cinema.
