Fallece Robin Williams, gran actor y genio de la comedia

Robin Williams (Chicago, Illinois, Estados Unidos 21 de julio de 1951 – Tiburón, California, Estados Unidos, 11 de agosto de 2014), el famoso actor estadounidense de 63 años de edad, fue hallado muerto en su domicilio. Aunque la policía no ha cerrado todavía la investigación, se ha confirmado que el actor cometió suicidio asfixiándose.  La esposa del actor, Susan Schneider, emitió un comunicado en el que expresaba su dolor ante la pérdida de su marido y su mejor amigo, y solicitaba a los medios que se respetase la intimidad de la familia durante unos momentos tan delicados.

La noticia creó un profundo impacto en Hollywood, numerosos artistas expresaron su pena y aquellos que conocieron al actor en persona hablaron de su amabilidad y generosidad, como el presentador Conan O’Brien, quien descubrió la noticia mientras grababa su programa.

Robin Willams estudió interpretación en Julliard desde 1973 a 1976, donde coincidió con Christopher Reed en clases en las que eran los únicos alumnos admitidos y durante las que forjaron una amistad que duraría hasta el fallecimiento de Reed. En 1976 Williams se trasladó a California donde tuvo varios trabajos en cine y televisión. En 1978 fue elegido para interpretar a un alienígena llamado Mork en la exitosa sit-com Días felices; su personaje se hizo tan popular que obtuvo su propia serie spin-off llamado Mork and Mindy que se emitió de 1978 a 1982; sin embargo fue el cine el que le trajo sus mayores éxitos y reconocimiento como actor. Williams destacaba tanto en la comedia como en el drama, tras varias nominaciones a los Oscar  por Good morning, Vietnam (1987), El club de los poetas muertos (1989) y El rey pescador (1991), consiguió hacerse con el Oscar al mejor actor secundario por su trabajo en El indomable Will Hunting (1997). Además realizó otras películas de gran éxito como Hook (1991) Señora Doubtfire, papá de por vida (1993), Jumanji (1995), Patch Adams (1998), Jack (1996), Flubber y el profesor chiflado (1997), El hombre bicentenario (1999), Retrato de una obsesión (2002) o la saga de Noche en el museo y se convirtió en un aclamado actor de doblaje gracias a su actuación como el Genio de Aladdin (1992) durante la cual improvisó gran parte de su diálogo. Williams también prestó su voz a la película Ferngully (1992), Robots (2005) y la ganadora del Oscar Happy Feet, rompiento el hielo.

Williams compaginó su trabajo de actor con el de monologuista de comedia. Hizo varios shows a lo largo de su vida, los más exitosos fueron An evening with Robin Williams (1982), Robin Williams: Live at the Met (1986), Robin Williams live on Broadway (2002), y Robin Williams: Weapons of self destruction (2009).

Su vida personal fue algo agitada: estuvo casado en tres ocasiones, la primera vez con  Valerie Velardi con quien tuvo un hijo llamado Zachary Pym Williams, la segunda con Marsha Garces con quien tuvo a Zelda Rae Willaims y a Cody Alan Williams y la tercera vez con la diseñadora gráfica Susan Schneider, con quien estuvo casado hasta el momento de su muerte. Se enfrentó a una adicción a la cocaína durante finales de los setenta y ochenta que logró superar con éxito, algo que tristemente no ocurrió con su adicción al alcohol en la que recayó varias veces durante la década del 2000, ni con la depresión que posiblemente le llevó al suicidio.

A pesar de su muerte todavía podremos verle en la pantalla en el futuro gracias a cuatro proyectos ahora póstumos: Noche en el museo 3, Boulevard, Merry friggin Christmas, y The angriest man in Brooklyn (ya estrenada en Estados Unidos), a los que hay que añadir su trabajo como Dennis el perro en la película de animación Absolutely anything.

Un gran actor de talento irrepetible, Robin Williams deja atrás un gran legado como actor y como persona. Descanse en paz.

Robin Williams, great actor and comedic genius, dies.

Robin Williams (Chicago, Illinois, USA 21^st of July, 1951 – Tiburon, California, USA, 11^th of August 2014), the famous actor aged 63 was found dead in his home. Even though the police is still investigating, it’s been confirmed that the actor committed suicide by hanging himself. The actor’s wife, Susan Schneider, published a press release expressing the pain the loss of her husband and her best friend has caused her, and she asked the media to respect their privacy in this difficult times.

The news had a deep impact on Hollywood, several artists expressed their sadness after hearing the news and those who personally knew the actor talked about his generosity and his kindness, like Conan O’Brien, who found out what happened while filming his show.

Robin Williams studied to become an actor at Julliard from 1973 to 1976, there he met Christopher Reed as a fellow student in some classes where they were the only students, thanks to that they established a friendship that lasted until Reed’s death. In 1976 Williams moved to California where he worked in several TV and film projects, in 1978 he was casted to play an alien in the hit sit-com “Happy Days”, and his character was so popular he got a spin-off show called “Mork and Mindy”, that aired from 1978 to 1982. Even though he worked in TV from time to time, he got most of his success and recognition working on feature films. Williams was a great comedy and drama actor, after several Oscar nominations for his work in “Good Morning Vietnam” (1987), “Dead Poets Society” (1989) and “The Fisher King” (1991), he got an Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in “Good Will Hunting” (1997). He also worked in some very successful films like “Hook” (1991) “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993), “Jumanji” (1995), “Patch Adams” (1998), “Jack” (1996), “Flubber” (1997), “Bicentennial Man” (1999), “One Hour Photo” (2002) or the “Night at the Museum” films and he became a very acclaimed voice actor thanks to his role as the Genie from “Aladdin” (1992) that included a great deal of improvisation from Williams, and other animated films like “Ferngully” (1992), “Robots” (2005) and the Oscar winner “Happy Feet”.

Besides his work as an actor, Williams had a career as a stand-up comedian and he staged several shows through the years, the most famous ones being “An Evening With Robin Williams” (1982), “Robin Williams: Live at The Met” (1986), “Robin Williams live on Broadway” (2002), and “Robin Williams: Weapons of Self Destruction” (2009). 

His personal life was a little bit rocky at times. He was married three times: the first time with Valerie Velardi with whom he had a son named Zachary Pym Williams; the second time he married Marsha Garces who gave him two children, Zelda Rae Williams and Cody Alan Williams and his third and final wife was the graphic designer Susan Schneider who is now his widow. He was able to recover from a cocaine addiction during the seventies and the eighties, but sadly he couldn’t do the same with his alcoholism, he had several relapses during the last few years while dealing with his depression, a mental sickness that possibly had a hand in his suicide.

Even though he is dead, we will still be able to see him in our screens in the future thanks to a few projects that have not been released yet and are now posthumous titles: “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb”, “Boulevard”, “Merry friggin Christmas” and “The Angriest Man in Brooklyn” (that has been released in the USA but not in Spain), and also the animated film “Absolutely Anything”, where he voices Dennis the dog.

A great actor with a unique talent, Robin Williams leaves behind a great legacy as an actor and as a person. Rest in peace.
