Cabaret, unconsciousness and forced awake

The progress of an announced holocaust runs a musical that supposes a scream for freedom

‘Cabaret’ continues its tour in Zaragoza with a show that analyses with humor the decline of the German society in the 30’s. Nazism, homosexuality, prostitution, or the refusal of a full happiness due to the fear of losing  an idyllic and improbable future mark the script that leads to a lonely and inevitable end.

The subtle way of including topics that cause melancholy mixed with its ridicule create a full and credible comedy where the spectator can reach a stage of escape and total abstraction. A glamorous and gloomy atmosphere where the public has the necessity of feeling sorry about the future where the character is irremediably going to. Clairvoyants sitting on their seats, with hands and legs tied, who in spite of the sorrow, don´t even think about raising their hands, no one would never dare to interrupt so much splendour.

‘Cabaret’ is a show based on the play ‘I Am a Camera’, by Jhon Van Drulen, adaptation of the short novel ‘Goodbye To Berlín’, whose first performance in Broadway was the 20th of November, 1966. Songs that are in the cultural memory like Willkomen, Cabaret or Money Money are the soundtrack.

Tthe lights are off and Emcee appears, the master of ceremonies, and sets the tone with his own style, in whose evolution stands out a physical and psychological deterioration. Without embarrassment and with an appreciable admiration to himself and to his lifestyle of promiscuity and bisexuality, he invites, with no hesitation, to leave the problems outside.

The storyline starts with the arrival of a North American novelist, who left his natal city to find experiences that help him write his next work. With strong homosexual inclinations, Cliff (Alejandro Tous) falls in love with a dancer of the nocturnal club Kit Kat, Sally. After months of living together in a bubble full of overspent and lack of self-control, the reality disturbs their daydream: Sally is pregnant.

This succession of unexpected occur in the hostel of Schneider (Amparo Saizar), a resigned single who falls in love with Schultz (Enrique R. Del Portal), the fruit seller. An inevitable passion truncated because of the heartbreaking situation that Jewish people are experiencing in Germany. Schneider starts doubting about her marriage with a ‘no-German’, a worry which the greengrocer prefers to escape from, he is just a German. An abort, two farewells and the progress of an announced holocaust are the end of a musical that supposes a scream for freedom.

I was at university the first time I saw the Les Misérables musical in Madrid; it shocked me so much as I could not resist the temptation to see it again as often as I could; crying each time like the first time, even though I don´t usually cry very easily....

Víctor Hugo's book, written in 1862 and converted into one of the best-known novels of the 19th century, is also one of the best musicals of recent decades. It tells a tragic story of passion, sacrifice, and unrequited love. In my opinion, it is so breathtakingly real, that it is impossible to not to relate to some part of the book and fall under the spell of one of its characters.

The book reflects early 19th French society, its politics and customs, and therefore
Victor Hugo’s open opposition to the death penalty, imposed on France by the Revolution.

At the end of December, we will again have the pleasure of seeing it in our cinemas after almost a year of filming. This time with the added delight of seeing the stars of the movie: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway, among others. The early viewings have received some excellent reviews, and it has been proposed as a candidate for the 2013 Oscar Awards.

I'm already looking forward to the premiere in Spain! I'll have my tissues ready!

LION KING, THE MUSICAL

Over the last month, posters and leaflets have appeared on every street in Madrid with the image of a black lion on a yellow background. The Lion King musical has arrived in the Spanish capital.
The musical, which is a worldwide success, has reached an audience of 500.000 in the Lope de Vega theatre, on the Gran Via, one of the main streets of Madrid. The theatre is considered the Spanish Broadway, with more than 33,000 performances so far.

The show is brilliantly directed by Julie Taymor, who saw the conversion of the famous film to the theatre as a big challenge. She researched information in so many different scenographies, collecting information about cultures from Asia, Europe, Africa and America. Everybody can see the attention to detail in the musical, from the magnificent make up of the characters, the lighting tricks, the Chinese shadows, and the use of so many different elements to create the sets.

Despite the hard work involved, for this director, one of the main goals accomplished was, without any doubt, the emotional connection people felt. She saw with her own eyes how people around the world, despite being part of different cultures and characters, connect in the same way to every part of the play; as Julie Taymor said, she has achieved a ‘universal narrative’.

The performance of all the actors and actresses should also be highlighted, as they play their part perfectly: from the all-star acting of Phindile Mkhize as Rafiki, to the curious performance of Zazú, Scar and Timon’s funny Andalucía accent.

The Walt Disney Studios Division (the company that directs this musical), is another great success of the Disney Enterprise, because since its start in 1994 with Thomas Schumacher in charge, it has been a race to the top. They have already released eight shows and some, like Beauty and the Beast (which was their first one), ran for 13 consecutive years.
