“Kreuzweg”

Inscrutable and mysterious are the ways of God. As much as the simultaneously dizzying and gradual evolution of the vital frame that fits our existence. It is cornered and even bullied many times by different ideological, educational or religious charges that conform the own individual environment. So it should take exceptional paths, trying to solve this tough task with which we deal on a daily basis, being carried along, influenced by these or those precepts that somehow have been imposed on other competitors.

“Kreuzweg” urges the viewers (faithful or not) to accompany a fourteen-year-old girl decided to undertake without dealing with any other considerations emerging in teen life, a particular Stations of the Cross. She aims to be part of this select number of souls who gave their lives for others always pushed by this divine aura that will automatically give them the martyrs’ category.

The one-way approach with which the German director Dietrich Brüggemann portrays the story, that at first seems to be a critique to the soporific and consensual religious fanaticism by ecclesiastical and progenitor authorities, but it is slowly diluted while it keeps apostilling the psychological tortures suffered by the girl. It even becomes an ally as the movie footage parades through the projector light with what could become this miraculous stage which the young woman craves to become, already converted into well-deserved martyr, as a result of her determination and spiritual strength. Such is the case that is not appreciated a clear stance that Brüggemann chooses among this melting-pot of religious factors and sacrifice through faith, letting the viewer create a personal opinion after the final credits without showing any distorting element.

The film is divided into fourteen parts symbolizing the fourteen stations of Jesus´ Way of the Cross. Choosing the level that you want to emphasize this or which narrative element, the German filmmaker masterfully attracts the attention of the audience with the camera with great success, suggesting with each movement an emotion´s bonus connected by force of traveling with each movement. Scenes made by the blow of a descriptive scalpel without any waste, which show us emphatically the visual power of each sequence.
We want to highlight the work of the young protagonist Lea Van Acken (Maria). The film became the winner of the Award for Best Screenplay in Berlin and the silver spike in Seminci de Valladolid. Sometimes an Ascension into heaven makes all the terrestrial seem entirely unimportant.

Premios Feroz 2015

Mejor cartel – Magical Girl

Feroz Awards 2015

On Tuesday December 16th the nominees for the second edition of the Feroz Awards were announced. These awards are given by the Spanish film review and they are the prelude to the Goya Awards.

This year it will not be easy for the film critics, since the level of the Spanish productions have grown considerably. Among the nominees are “La Isla Mínima”, first on the list and a very powerful thriller; “Magical Girl”, the extravagant and explosive jewel of the year; “Carmina y Amén”, the second film directed by Paco León after “Carmina o Revienta”, a very authentic comedy, this time more profound and reflective; “Loreak”, an exciting and delicate melodrama, and “10,000 km”, a film as romantic as depressing.

WhileMagical Girl” is the most innovative and surprising film, “La Isla Mínima” will also be its tough competitor due to its cleanliness and the hard work of its director, whose job is perhaps time to recognize. However, we have decided to do our own prediction of the awards, which will be held on Sunday January 25th at the Gran Teatro Ruedo Las Ventas, in a ceremony hosted by Barbara Santa Cruz:

Lucas Vidal: Harmony, melody and a great sense of rhythm

Lucas Vidal is one of the most prominent young Hollywood composers and he is a mixture of a young prodigy and someone who has worked very hard. He was born in Madrid but he lives in Los Angeles. Lucas came to the Madrid Premiere Week to provide a masterclass about soundtracks compositions at ‘Escuela TAI’. During a two hours class he drew public attention with his “I’m just a normal man” speech accompanied by a piano improvisation and he defined his work as a mixture of “harmony, melody and rhythm”.
Other renowned artists gave different masterclasses throughout this fourth edition of the  Madrid Premiere Week. “La Isla Mínima” film’s crew, the VICE magazine team, or the animator Sergio Pablos, among others, spoke in an educational way about their personal and professional experience. Among them was Lucas Vidal, without making too much noise because he would finish making music. He also spoke about his origins, about his training at Berklee College of Music, about his life orchestral recordings across the world and about his companies Mumo and Chroma dedicated to express film feelings through music.
The Madrilenian composer talked about how difficult it is to succeed in Hollywood and recognised that “no one's given me anything for free”. He told the story of the sleepless nights spent at the library studying John Williams´ compositions and the story of a motorcycle trip to the Cannes Festival where he had to make greater efforts to keep the suit clean. Both are examples of the passion and the time spent by the musician to achieve his goals. As he admits himself “behind each reject there is a fresh opportunity”.
Big admirer of Morricone and Alberto Iglesias among others, Lucas gave a motivational talk highlighting the importance of the talent but most of all of the efforts: “Nobody really minds where you have studied, you need to make projects, to be creative and to work hard”. He continued again in the discourse and talked about the importance of insist and of identifying the opportunities offered in big cities such as Madrid. After beating a cancer when he was only 20 years old, Lucas had a big hunger to conquer the world. As he recognize at the Berklee TEDx Talks, maybe a composer may not save a person’s life or may not walk on the moon but he can touch people, share emotions using just music.
His calendar has an important date in our country: The Concert in tribute to John Williams at the Zarzuela theatre. “Armony, melody and a great sense of rhythm” which, mixed in a not so normal man as he would have us believe, are translated in “talent, work and a lot of attitude”. No more nor less, until the music stops.

“Mortadelo & Filemon”
On Friday 29 November Javier Fesser’s last film was released: Mortadelo Y and Filemón Contra Jimmy el Cachondo (Mortadelo & Filemon against Funny Jimmy); a wild, funny, and technically brilliant animation film. Many felt that the best way to bring to life these two unique characters drawn by the genius Ibáñez was through animation, however, we should not forget the two predecessor films, which counted with flesh and blood actors: “Mortadelo & Filemon: The Big Adventure”, also directed by Javier Fesser; surprising for its visual effects and its great reception by the public; and “Mortadelo & Filemon. Mission: Save the Planet”, directed by Miguel Bardem, which was considered less eccentric but certainly weaker in terms of script.
In this new adventure, Mortadelo and Filemon must retrieve a document of tremendous importance for the T.I.A. which has gone into the hands of Jimmy “el Cachondo. On the other hand, Filemon will have to ally with "the Tronchamulas", a criminal who had escaped from prison to assassinate him. To meet their goal they will be assisted by Bacterio and his new invention, the Reversicina, a potion that changes people to the opposite of what they are.
In this third film everything has been cared down to the smallest detail. For the voices the director counted with professional actors such as Karra Elejalde (Mortadelo), an actor who many will surely know as the strict father of Amaia in “Ocho Apellidos Vascos”; and Janfri Topera (Filemon). Other known voices are those of Mariano Venancio and Berta Ojea (which repeat in their respective characters of El Super and Ofelia), Victor Monigote (Tronchamulas) and Gabriel Chamme (Jimmy). Of course, we should not forget the role of Rompetechos, a great character and a fundamental part of the plot.
As for the soundtrack, the song I forgot to live, by Julio Iglesias, stars in several memorable moments in the film. For the already grown ones, the film includes several jokes of pure actuality: concerning the crisis, corruption or social networks.
So far the film has had a great success; in its first weekend it grossed 1.4 million euros, the second highest grossing film in Spain; a great opening which closes a very fruitful year for Spanish cinema.
